Book Review - The Dead Can't Speak

Writing a review without spoilers is difficult sometimes.  Especially for a book you truly enjoyed, as you want to share the things that really pulled you in and kept you there.  DI Sara Ramsey is a character that's easy to care about, as is her partner, Carla.  The homicide unit is a difficult unit in any law enforcement department, and comes with it's own set of unique problems.  Low budgets, demanding superiors and long hours, many times without approval for overtime.

One of the things I love about M. A. Comley's books are her characters are never one-dimensional. They have real lives, with real life problems.  Sara's team has real lives with real life problems. They support each other and yet aren't afraid to call each out if it gets too deep.

In the Dead Can't Speak we have a dastardly villain, with no redeeming qualities.  We get an opportunity to meet his victims, women he's used for his own purposes. Women who care about him, and may even be in love with him.

If you've followed Sara's story with No Right To Kill and Deadly Blow, you're up to date on her husband's murder.  If not, I highly recommend you start with No Right to Kill and get to know Sara. She's waited a long time for her husband's murderer to be brought to justice, and now it seems she's finally going to get her wish. But will the price she has to pay be too high? Will it destroy her career and her personal life?  Well, you'll have to read the book to find out.

Add to the mixture her husband's still grieving family and their demands on Sara's time.  And seriously, what's up with his brother, Donald?

A fantastic character driven thriller/mystery. Love the neighbors, and I look forward to a long running series on this one.  All three books are available at Amazon and also available on Kindle Unlimited.

Book Review - Heroic Justice, M. A. Comley

A long-time fan of DI Lorne Warner and the Justice series, and more recently a fan of the DI Hero Nelson series I was thrilled when Mel announced she was combining the two characters for a new novel.  Both characters have strong personalities, and both are willing to step outside the boundaries when necessary. Would they be able to work together?

Due to family problems I was a little late on starting my ARC and had the advantage of reading other reviews which touted this as Ms. Comley's best book yet.  This made me even more eager to dive in with a fresh cup of coffee and bury myself in the pages. In my opinion it was going to be hard for her to top my two favorite reads--Dubious Justice and Cold Case from the DI Sally Parker series. Those two books left an emotional impact with me that kept me thinking of them long after I finished the books, and they still remain at the top of my list for favorite reads.

To coin a British phrase I did find Heroic Justice 'bloody brilliant'.  As an author myself I may notice things that I wouldn't perhaps just reading a good book. I'm not a huge fan of narrative and love character driven fiction. Heroic did not disappoint. At times I felt I was in the room with the characters listening to the conversation as Ms. Comley weaved in background for both characters so seamlessly that I was awe struck. Absolutely brilliant! Readers who have never opened a Justice book or a Hero book will still feel they know the characters intimately. Readers who have followed these characters as I have will thoroughly enjoy the revisiting of the past through conversation, not an info dump.  Can I saw 'brilliant' again?

In today's world serial killers are more the norm than the exception. Often to find them you have to understand their motives. Both Lorne and Hero do an excellent job of delving deep into the few clues the killer leaves behind. Having experienced tragedy in their own lives their compassion for the victims and their families is heart-warming. An excellent police procedural.

I would definitely tag this a five star read for lovers of crime, police procedure and fast-paced thrillers. I loved seeing Lorne and her husband, Tony, working together and hope that becomes more of the norm in future novels. I can't imagine working with my husband, but the mutual respect Tony and Lorne have for each other, and the skills each possesses makes them a perfect working couple. So often we get a one-sided few of characters and experience only their work, but Ms. Comley is delightful in her ability to show the many facets--even flaws--of each character, including the antagonist.

I recommend setting aside some time before you start, as once you get involved you're not going to want to stop reading until the very last page...and even then you may find yourself thinking about this book. Available for pre-order now.  Release date--11/13/17.

Happy Reading!

Double Jeopardy Blog Tour Book Review

One of the great things about social media is it gives us a chance to sort of meet authors that otherwise we'd never have the opportunity to get to know. M. A. Comley actually introduced me to British writing and British authors, and I moved from there to many British TV police shows. Luther will always be one of my favorite, heart breaking shows to remember. Much like the stories told in movies and television, Mel's books are never one-dimensional. There isn't just a murder, investigation, arrest and end to the book. We get a chance to know the main character, the supporting characters, the families, loves and hates of all those involved, and we get to ride along during the investigation.  I'm thrilled and honored to be a part of this blog tour and share my review of Double Jeopardy.

DOUBLE JEOPARDY

Successful entrepreneur, Ross Spalding, has everything to live for; a thriving business, a stunning new home, and a high society wedding to his beautiful fiancee to look forward to in the coming months. That is, until his life comes to an abrupt, gruesome end.  DI Hero Nelson and his team need to dig deep to find the reasons behind someone wanting Ross Spalding dead.  As more people connected to Ross also die, some in suspicious circumstances, the suspect list grows beyond all expectations, until a major clue presents itself and spins the investigation off in a totally new direction.  However, Hero's personal life is also dealt a major blow when his parents are faced with a life or death situation.  He is forced to put his personal problems aside when the murderers are revealed and Hero is faced with a tight deadline in which to apprehend them.

MY REVIEW

Double Jeopardy is the fourth book in the Hero series, but like all Ms. Comley's books can be read as a stand alone. You're not left hanging at the end waiting for months or sometimes years to find out what really happened.  I would recommend you read the other Hero books, but it isn't necessary to read those to thoroughly enjoy this one.

I haven't been as big a Hero fan as I am a DI Lorne Warner fan from the Justice series and DI Sally Parker from the Parker series. Perhaps I'm just prone to female leads, but I do love Hero. I quickly became engrossed in his personal and family life, and it was easy for me to feel his pain and heartbreak during certain situations. Double Jeopardy gave me a chance to really get to know Hero better. To meet his wife, mother, father, twin sister and share the love and the pain. I would recommend you keep a box of Kleenex handy when reading this one. I won't share more on that, because with all good books it's difficult to write a great review without giving away spoilers, and as a reader who enjoys finding those things out myself I try to never include spoilers in my reviews.

One of the things I've loved and hated the most with British TV and British authors is they don't sugar coat life. Crime is ugly, and it's vicious, and not all situations have a happy ending. All of this comes across in every book written by Mel, many of them reading like true crime. Double Jeopardy captured my attention in the very first scene, and I read it in two sittings, both on the same day, as I simply couldn't put it down until I knew who and why.  As with true crime, Mel not only gives you great detectives, teams and families, you also get a chance to know the victims. All characters are well fleshed out, giving you the opportunity to love or hate them. I liked Ross Spalding, but felt in the beginning he might be just a little too good to be true. Was he?  You'll have to read the book to find out. I'm not telling.

I originally thought I knew who and why, but that theory was blown out of the water just a few chapters in and I'm left devouring the pages see to what happens next. So don't get cocky like I sometimes do and think ah, ha, I know who did it. The odds are, that just like me, you're going to be wrong.

I loved being a part of the well thought out, and documented investigation mixed with Hero's personal family struggles, and would rate this another sensational crime/police procedural. I gave it 5 stars, and highly recommend it.

Guest Author Interview - British Author, Tara Lyons

Today I have the lovely and talented British author, Tara Lyons as my guest. Tara is not only a fabulously fun person, but also has a relatively new book on the market, No Safe Home, published by Bloodhound Books in January of 2017. For all you book lovers, Tara’s book is currently on sale through March 15th. Buy links are below. Check out this video! All I can say is WOW!

LP: Good morning Tara, and thank you for being my guest today.

TL: Hi, Linda. Thanks so much for having me today.

LP: Let’s jump right in. Tell us a little about yourself. Where do you live now, and where did you grow up?

TL: I live in England. I was born in London and have always lived here.

LP: I love British accents, and have become a huge fan of both British authors and British TV Dramas like Luther and River. Do you feel that the environment you were raised in has any effect on your choice of genre?

TL: Subconsciously, it may be why I write the novels I do. It’s probably no surprise that London can be littered with crime, as well as the tourist landmarks and beautiful cultures. Just watching the news the other day I knew the locations where a murder, rape and World War II bomb was found. They were all within thirty minutes driving distance from my house.

LP: Well, I’m a little twisted so I notice crime scenes more often than others too. When and why did you begin writing?

TL: I’ve loved writing and telling stories from a young age. In 2015, I finally made the jump – after tremendous help from some amazing friends – and began writing.

LP: Share with us what inspired your first book.

TL: My first book, In The Shadows, came from a place of grief after my own Grandad lost his battle with cancer. I was also reading a lot of crime novels at the time and I’ve always enjoyed watching those kinds of programmes on TV. I combined all those elements together and told my own story.

LP: I love it when an author does that. I personally love book titles, and I’m often amazed at how well a title fits the book. How do you come up with your titles?

TL: I played around with the title for In The Shadows for a little while. I was using different words to see what images they invoked in my mind. Ultimately, the simplest is what worked. With No Safe Home, the title was there before I wrote the first word. I wasn’t certain where the story would go, or who the secondary characters were, but I knew it would focus on the center place for families, the place we should feel the safest.

LP: I hear comments all the time that readers “just didn’t get it” when describing certain books that attempted to convey a message. Is there a specific message in your novels that you’d like the reader to grasp?

TL: For me, this is more evident for In The Shadows than No Safe Home. From the reviews, readers seem to connect with the themes and characters in my current book a lot more. What I was trying to portray with In The Shadows was that a person’s grief, born from a death of natural causes, can be as traumatic and life-changing as any other loss.

LP: How much of your book is realistic or based on real life issues?

TL: No Safe Home isn’t based on a real-life event, but I used what I know and what I see to write it. I too am a single mother to a young boy living in London, so I took inspiration from the fact that sometimes there is a strange noise, or extra creak of the floorboard and I reach for the baseball bat behind my bed.

LP: Wow, us thriller/suspense writers do have to fight our imagination quite often. I often think I hear footsteps in the kitchen or hallway. When did you first consider yourself a writer?

TL: When I signed with Bloodhound Books, I think I was in a bubble for a while. I felt like I had made it. By this point I had co-authored with the formidable M.A. Comley and self-published In The Shadows. But, to receive the recognition and support of an amazing publishing company, I truly believed in myself.

LP: Do you have a specific writing style?

TL: Although I write crime novels, and my main character is a Detective Inspector, I like to include another voice to my stories. Therefore, alongside the main DI, I also have another lead character – always female – who is somehow caught up in the story. I want my readers to enjoy the police chase element, but also how a normal, everyday person is affected by the perils of crime. I write short, snappy chapters because, as a reader, I enjoy that pace.

LP: Exactly the type of pace I love, and I’ve always felt a touch of reality lends credence to fiction, especially crime stories. If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?

TL: M.A. Comley – and I didn’t even have to think about that answer. She is a power-house Indie author who has built her business, her brand, her readership and her talent. She always strives for the best and I’m constantly in awe of her. I’m also privileged to call her a dear friend.

LP: Mel is truly an inspiration to all those who know her. Not only does she write amazing stories, she’s always there to lend a hand to a new author. We could literally talk about her all day. I picked up on the fact that like me, you’re an avid reader yourself. What book are you reading now?

TL: My list is never ending! But, last night I started The Abattoir of Dreams by Mark Tilbury and I have In Plain Sight, M.A. Comley’s new one, lined up next.

LP: Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?

TL: Nicky Black – her book, The Prodigal, is dark and gritty and I cannot wait to read more from here. Likewise, Ross Greenwood’s powerful The Boy Inside, really made me think young people in this world and the decisions they make; can’t wait for his new one. I am also looking forward to David McCaffrey’s new novel, Nameless.

LP: If you had it to do all over again, would you change anything in your first book?

TL: Yes. I think I would have given more explanation to the ‘why’

LP: Are you currently working on a new book, and if so, can you share some of it with us?

TL: I am working on book 3 in the DI Hamilton series, which will be published later this year. I can’t give too much away, but so far I have focused on families and the home, this time I’m delving into the relationships we have with our friends.

LP: You’ll have to keep us updated on your progress. What has been the most challenging part of writing your current work in progress?

TL: I want more time. I work around my son, as he attends part-time pre-school and therefore my schedule is dictated a lot around him.

LP: Who are your favorite authors and what is it that really strikes you about their work?

TL: This is the hardest question. Obviously, M.A. Comley is up at the top of the list because I admire the skill she has. Likewise, in the past 12 months I’ve read a lot of indie authors, or authors that I don’t think enough people know about. And the authors who strike a chord with me are because they makes me feel something, the story stays with me and, to me, that’s the sign of a great writer – Barbara Copperthwaite, Betsy Reavley, Ross Greenwood, Netta Newbound, Tammy Robinson, Sue Watson, Jojo Moyes, JK Rowling, Truman Capote.

LP: Our lists are quite similar, which may be why I enjoyed your book so much. Do you actually travel to the places you write about?

TL: The majority of my scenes are located in places I know – it’s not a case of travelling to them to research them, I know them because they are the places I’ve grown up and visited many times over the years.

LP: Do you design your own covers?

TL: No, I’m very lucky to have had all my covers expertly designed by some very talented people.

LP: You did a great job. What was the hardest part of writing your book?

TL: I think the editing process. Of course, I wanted to make No Safe Home the very best it can be, but I always worry at the editing stage that I’ve become too close to it, I can’t see what needs to be changed.

LP: I hear you there. I’m getting ready to start the first rewrite of my current WIP. Do you feel that you learned something from writing your book, and if so, what?

TL: I take the time to read all the Amazon reviews and I use those as my teachings for writing. I feel very humbled that No Safe Home has received some awesome feedback, but they’ve also been pointers on making the next one even better. Hopefully.

LP: I’m sure it will be great. Do you have any advice for other writers?

TL: The advice I was once given – Don’t get it right, get it written. And, although the editing stage of the process isn’t my favourite part, that line always stays with me. Don’t keep the ideas in your head, thinking they’re not good enough. Don’t agonise over the first sentence, or first paragraph, trying to make it on point straight away. Write down all the words, all the characters, all the dialogue and themes. Then, you have something to work with.

LP: Is there anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

TL: The first anniversary of publishing my solo debut novel is close approaching (March 17th) and it’s been the most fantastic year of my life. I’ve achieved so much, met so many fantastic people and been given great opportunities. To my readers, I thank you for that. Without you, none of that would have been possible – your support and encouraging is what spurs me on.

LP: Thank you, Tara, for sharing with us today. I look forward to reading and reviewing your next book in the near future. Please drop me a line and stop by to update us.

TL: Thank you, Linda. As someone who has read and loved your books, I’m honoured to have had this chat with you.

It's Pub Day! Happy New Year!

When Mel and I decided to write a book together, which quickly turned into writing a series together, we never dreamed we'd fall in love with out characters, and that our reader response would be so fabulous.  Today is publication day for Book 2 in the Deception series, and we're thrilled with the response we've received so far from early reviewers. Below is a little snippet from Book 2.

PROLOGUE

Slap.
“I’ve warned you before about messing with my man.”
Candy Granger rubbed her burning cheek. Why did her mother always have to take their side? It had been the same with the lowlife who had warmed her mother’s bed before the detestable Duke. The scumbag made her skin crawl each time he dared to look at her, always thrusting his crotch in her direction and running his tongue around his lips. “Messing with your man, Mom? He’s the one who had his hands all over me. Open your eyes—he’s been trying to feel me up ever since I turned fifteen.”
She ducked to avoid a second slap as her mother screamed at her. “Get your bags and get outta my sight. When I was fifteen…”
Candy stopped listening. She’d heard the “when I was fifteen” story for the last ten years. It always ended the same—with her mother extolling how much she’d sacrificed and how ungrateful Candy was. “Forget it, Mom. I’ll leave.”
She glared at Duke as she stalked through the living room and into her tiny bedroom. Now that he knows Mom is going to take his side, the gross son of a bitch will get even braver. The sound of her mother screaming at Duke gave her some comfort. What Candy couldn’t figure out was why her mother had come down so heavily on her instead of him. Any decent mother would have thrown out the boyfriend, not her only child. She strained an ear—the shouting had stopped. Then the trailer began to rock. It was always the same.
Candy packed her backpack and left her bedroom. The sound of her mother and Duke having sex filled her with disgust. Mother was never going to change; neither were the men she dragged home with her. All her lovers had tried it on with Candy, eventually. Candy opened the front door then let it slam shut behind her. Dammit, all I needed was one more month. Ms. Tyson had promised to help me get my work paper.
Leaving the trailer park, she sighed heavily, relieved in a way to be out of there. The park was well known to the NYPD. Her mom’s drug habit in particular had brought several officers to their door over the past few years. Nevertheless, it had been a place to sleep. What now?
The conundrum played on her mind during her trek to the city. Without any money, no close friends, and no family she knew of, there was no place to go. She couldn’t go to the shelter, not after the problems her mother had caused the last time she’d found Candy there.
“Shit!” she exclaimed as a pebble pushed its way through the sole of her shoe. She glanced at the sky. “Is that all you’ve got? My feet were already hurting.” A sudden gust of wind struck up, driving the dust from the road into her tired eyes, blinding her for a second. Candy laughed and sat beside the road, rubbing at her eyes. Cursing God might not be the brightest idea I’ve had.
Candy heard the sound of a vehicle pulling up beside her and peered through the darkness as the door to a Winnebago opened. An older woman smiled at her.
“You look lost, child. What are you doing out here in the middle of nowhere all by yourself?” the kind-looking woman asked.
Candy hesitated for a moment, thinking of all the horror stories she’d heard on the news recently, but her aching feet and the way the woman was smiling warmly at her soon dispersed her fear. “I was headed into town, but the road dust blinded me.”
A robust older man leaned forward over the steering wheel and asked, “Do you need a lift?”
“No, it’s okay. Besides, you’re going in the wrong direction. I don’t want to put you out.”
“Nonsense,” the woman said quickly. “When was the last time you ate a decent meal, child? You look like a good strong wind would blow you away.”
Candy realized she hadn’t eaten anything but snacks in two days. “I’m all right. I’m not hungry.” Her stomach rumbled noisily, disputing her claim. “Guess that’s my body’s way of calling me a liar.”
The three of them laughed. “Hop in. Our girls have already eaten and gone to bed. Plenty of fried chicken, mashed potatoes and green beans left.” She patted her husband’s protruding stomach. “I’d be shot if he didn’t get at least two proper meals every day. What do you say, child?”
Candy hesitated again. She was hungry, and maybe if she were lucky, they would let her sleep in the motor home, giving her one more day to figure out what she was going to do next. “I don’t want to impose on your kindness. I’ll be fine. I can see the city from here, and it won’t take me long to make it on foot.”
The man revved the engine of the Winnebago. “Leave the girl be, Elisa. You’re too pushy sometimes.”
The woman swiped her husband’s arm. “Hush now, John, what if it was one of our girls? I’m only trying to keep the child safe.” She turned to face Candy again. “Does your momma know you’re out here all on your own? We can drop you off at home.”
Her head dipped. “She doesn’t care. She kicked me out a few hours ago. She was in bed with her boyfriend when I left.”
“Such a shame. What about the rest of your family? Maybe we can drop you off at one of their homes.”
“I don’t have anyone else. I was going to stay at a shelter tonight until I figured out what to do.”
Tears welled up in the woman’s eyes. “How dreadful. Then you’re definitely accepting a ride from us. We’ll take you into the city, and if we can’t find a decent shelter, we’ll put you up in a hotel for the night.”
The more the couple interacted with her, the more she trusted them. Her view of adults was skewed by her years in the trailer park. What harm could it do to take a ride into the city? It would only take ten minutes instead of the hour or so she predicted it would take her to walk. “Okay, if you’re sure I’m not putting you out.”
The man reached into his pocket and pulled out a hundred-dollar bill. “Here, honey, take this. It should get you a decent room for the night.”
“Thank you.” Candy stuck the money in her jeans pocket.
The woman jumped out of the vehicle and opened the side door. “Get in. I’ll fix you something to eat before we drop you off.”
“Wow, this is beautiful.” Candy placed her bag on the floor. “I can’t thank you enough for pulling over and offering to help me out like this.”
“Nonsense.” Elisa shushed her. “Do you want to use the bathroom to freshen up? I’ll heat up the food for you. Third door on the right.”
Candy made her way to the bathroom, glancing into the bedroom on the left. The two bunk beds were occupied, but all she could see was long hair. She felt better knowing John and Elisa had children of their own. The smell of fried chicken seeped through the bathroom door, making her tummy rumble even more. Elation wrapped around her at her good fortune. So there are some kind people left in this crazy world. She rinsed the dirt out of her eyes, washed her hands and face, and dried them on the monogrammed beige towel hanging on the rail. Then she opened the door and rejoined her hosts. Glancing out the window, she realized how close they were to the city.
Elisa placed the scrumptious food on the plate and set it on the table. “Well, don’t let it go cold now. I’ve poured you some milk. Do you want coffee, too?”
“No, thank you. This smells fabulous.” Elisa motioned with her hand for Candy to tuck into her food. She did so with gusto before she downed her milk in one go. “That was great. Again, I can’t thank you…” Her tongue refused to work, and her jaw went slack as the woman standing before her suddenly started to look blurry. Before she could figure out what was happening, she tipped sideways onto the bench.
~ ~ ~
Candy woke several hours later, her head pounding as she struggled to remember exactly what had happened. Forcing her head off the pillow, she groaned as bright light hit her aching eyes. She pushed herself up off the bunk. She was no longer in the back of the Winnebago but in an ice-white room, wearing a matching white hospital gown. Maybe John and Elisa had an accident. Candy checked her body over, feeling for injuries. I’m not hurt, so where the hell am I? She walked to the door and tried the knob. Locked.
She turned to survey the room. It had a sterile quality that screamed hospital, but Candy couldn’t remember any hospital with nothing more than a bed, a sink and commode in the room. Her gaze homed in on the red numbers on the pillow. Thirty-Seven. She moved to the bed and pushed the pillow aside. The sheets had the same number printed on them, as did the blanket. What the hell? Curiosity overwhelmed her, and she pulled her arms out of the gown and turned it around. The number thirty-seven was stamped across the back in red. She pushed her arms through the holes and sat on the bunk. Looks like I’m number thirty-seven, and from what I can see, I’m in the loony bin.

Star Studded Performance - Book Review - Twisted Justice

Having followed the Justice series since book 1, Cruel Justice, I've developed a super sensitivity to Lorne Warner and her family and friends.  As with all great books it's necessary to like or hate the characters.  M. A. Comley weaves a cast of main characters that have been easy to love, and a cast of antagonists that for some might cause nightmares, but for others allows you the opportunity to look into the minds of some seriously evil villains.

Twisted Justice doesn't disappoint.  Not only does Ms. Comley bring back out favorites, Lorne and Katy and their MET crew, but also combines that with new favorites DI Sally Parker (Wrong Place and No Hiding Place).  The story starts with the a bang, and the action doesn't let up as these two well-seasoned crime professionals go after a family crime unit that would rival the American early Mafia families.

The antagonists, led by a very determined, controlling and cold mother, are real enough to have been formerly portrayed in true crime stories.  Believable unfortunately in the world we live in today.  Greed knows no bounds, and there is no honor among thieves.

Twisted Justice offers the reader a well developed and believable plot, in-depth and fabulous characterization.  If you love crime procedurals you'll love this one.

Looking for a new series that will give you months of enjoyment, then check out the remainder of the Justice series.

INTERNATIONAL AUTHORS' DAY BLOG HOP 2015

Welcome to the International Authors' Day Blog Hop 2015

Hosted by Book r3vie3s

To honor authors and readers, I have a $25.00 Gift Card to Amazon so that the winner can purchase some of their favorite authors' books. Don't forget to enter at the bottom, and visit the other blogs where you can also win some fabulous prizes.

Bloggers from around the country have come together to celebrate books and authors, and to say thank you. As an author I truly appreciate this, and as a reader I'd love to say thank you to all the wonderful authors who made my childhood an imaginative world of fascination.  Even now I love to get lost in a great book and if I'm not writing -- I'm reading. Some of my favorite authors have been Dean Koontz, James Patterson, Kay Hooper, Tami Hoag and occasionally Stephen King. And I will say thank you to these wonderful authors for many hours of reading pleasure and some nightmares.

Two years ago I discovered another wonderful author, Indie Author, M. A. Comley. I have thoroughly enjoyed her Justice series and getting to know DI Lorne Simpkins, now DS Lorne Warner.  Thanks to social media I've had the opportunity to "meet" Mel online and we've become friends, as many of her fans do. It doesn't take long to know that not only is she a very talented author, but she's also a warm, friendly and wonderful person.  I consider the opportunity to talk with authors one of the greatest advantages of social media, and I've thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Mel and her wonderful characters.  I will warn you up front, not all of her books are for the squeamish. She tackles real life subjects that most of us would like to pretend don't exist, and she does it in a way that's both informative and entertaining. A long time fan of shows like Criminal Minds and Blacklist I've found her insights into the criminal mind both terrifying and refreshing, and I do  thank God it's fiction, although many times it reads like true crime.

New York Times, USA Today, Amazon Top 20 bestselling author, iBooks top 5 bestselling and #2 bestselling author on Barnes and Noble.  Mel is a British author who moved to France in 2002, and that's when she turned her hobby into a career.

Mel shares her home with Mum, and her wonderful dog, Dex, who keeps her in shape by dragging her on long walks around the village.

I wanted to share two of my favorites from Ms. Comley for 2015.

Dubious Justice, Book 11 in the Justice series is definitely one of my all time favorites. An emotional, fast paced mystery that will have you reaching for Kleenex and cheering at the end.

Wrong Place - the debut novel in the DI Sally Parker series has quickly become my favorite read of 2015.  Absolutely loved the fact that although the head of a law enforcement unit, Sally Parker reads like a real person, and someone you know before you finish the book.  Mel has a way of pulling you into her character's lives, giving you a real glimpse into the everyday problems they face while trying to solve gruesome crimes.   A fabulous read, and one I highly recommend.

If you're looking for a new series author, I can highly recommend Ms. Comley as she has several other series that are equally good, but these are my favorites.  A great big Thank You to Mel for hours of reading enjoyment.  Please keep them coming.

Book Review - Wrong Place

I had the wonderful pleasure of reading an ARC of this debut novel of a new series by NYT and USA Today bestselling author, M. A. Comley.  A long time fan of her Justice series, I was surprised--in my humble opinion DI Sally Parker has blown DI Lorne Simpkins now Lorne Warner out of the running as my favorite all time series star.  A huge fan of the Alex Cross series by James Patterson, I love when I find an author that can keep a series going and still write page turning mystery/suspense and thrillers.  I'm impatiently waiting for book 2 in this series and hope Ms. Comley doesn't make me wait too long.

Book 1 introduces DI Sally Parker and her team. A serial killer is on the loose and one, at first glance, that shouldn't be hard to find as he picks his victims up in local bars and leaves behind a DNA sample. While waiting for the DNA results Sally and her team find themselves up against a brick wall as no one remembers who the victims were talking to or waited on at the bars. This guy simply blends in with the woodwork. They get their first break when the DNA samples come back with a hit on a convicted rapist recently released from prison. Like all criminals he professes his innocence, but with his arrest the team relaxes and plans their celebration--until another body turns up.

Combine the above with fabulous scenes into Sally's personal life, her partner's personal life, and you have a top notch read that will keep you turning pages all the way to the end--which leads to a very unexpected surprise. It's difficult to write more without giving away spoilers that I would prefer you read and enjoy for yourselves. A fabulous book with great characterization, well thought out and written plot and a fast paced thriller I simply couldn't put down.

I gave this book five stars and can highly recommend it to all my friends and fans.

Book Review - Silent Scream by Angela Marsons

In the last two years I've found myself becoming a true fan of British authors. It took me a while to get used to the differences in both our languages, our ways of saying things and the fact that their law enforcement doesn't carry guns. Having dipped into those waters with NYT bestselling author, M. A. Comley, and thoroughly enjoying myself, I've been searching and finding other British authors and haven't yet been disappointed.

I may be wrong, but I believe this is a debut book introducing DI Kim Stone and her team of detectives. All characters were well developed, and I enjoyed getting to know Kim as well as Stacy, Bryant and Kevin.

Although advertised and popular as a police procedural, this book could easily be classified as a psychological thriller. The reader is introduced to the main character through her memories of a heartbreaking and painful childhood. Memories elicited by the storyline of the bodies discovered at Crestwood, a former girls home. Originally somewhat put off by Kim's blunt, aggressive and seemingly nasty attitude, she grew on me as her character continued to develop and I saw through her shell. I would classify this as a complicated book with lots of characters and sub-plots to follow. Just the type of book I truly enjoy.

If you're not familiar with British slang you may find some passages that may at first confuse you, but the author has written these in a way that it grows on you. The scenery descriptions are also great and made me want to visit those places.

Fantastic plot, well written characters and an enjoyable read. I'll now be looking for more British authors to add to my TBR list.

Dubious Justice - Review

It's always difficult to review a really good book without giving away spoilers. I've enjoyed every Justice book written to date, but this one so far is my absolute favorite. It's one of those books that you can't help but continue turning pages because you have to know what's going to happen next, but at the same time you're watching the percentage knowing that the book is going to end soon and you just don't want it to. You want to stay here with characters you've grown to love, helping them uncover new clues, and sometimes you just want to reach out and give one of them a hug.

Katy and Lorne find themselves involved in murders being staged as suicides. All the victims seem to be wonderful people that no one would want to hurt. All family men who love their wives and children. When Katy is called away due to a family problem, Lorne finds herself once again partnered with her boss, Sean. The clues are few and far between and eventually lead them to an area that will shock and leave you in tears. I can't say more without giving away spoilers.

An awesome book, wonderful police procedural, and a cast that you'll thoroughly love.

Due to release on 4/17/15, but on pre-order now at the introductory price of $.99. I highly recommend this wonderful book to all mystery lovers.

Beyond A Reasonable Doubt - Meet the Supporting Cast

Now available for Pre-Order. Like all my books, I like to give my fans a chance to pick up new novels as cheap as possible. I've set the pre-order introductory price at $.99. See links below. Release date is April 17th, so stay tuned for a huge release party involving New York Times and USA Today best selling author, M. A. Comley. We'll have some great prizes and lots of fun. If you missed the earlier posts of "meet the good guys" and "meet the bad guys" you might want to take a quick look. I've rated this book R for language, violence and rape. If you're offended by any of that, you may want to pass on this one as it's much stronger and more graphic than my usual novels. Join me tomorrow for Blunders or Bloopers and out-takes.

THE SUPPORTING CAST

My fans who have read earlier novels realize it's unusual for me to limit myself to just the protagonist and antagonist, but normally include a supporting cast that weaves sub-plots into the novel. The supporting cast for Beyond became some of my favorite characters of all time. A few of them I'm sure will find their way into spin off novels of their own.

Clifford Beaumont ~~ No one works in Corpus Christi without feeling the political power of Clifford Beaumont. Rumors associate him with the mob, but no one has ever proven it. His hands have been clean for a long time, but they're about to get dirty. Real dirty.

Favorite Quote ~~ “They all say that, son. But everybody talks. All you’ve got to decide is how much blood you want to lose before you do it.”

Drago ~~ Former henchman for Marcus Dade. A dark and mysterious man.

Favorite Quote ~~ “You can call me Tom. It’s a good name.”

FBI Agent Carl Starks ~~ Another dark and mysterious man, playing both sides. A very dangerous game.

Favorite Quote ~~ "Take care, Miss James, and don’t trust anyone.” His jaw tightened, and his eyes darkened. “Even me.”

Gregory Artusa ~~ Henchman for Marcus Dade. A perfect example of the darkness of night, a natural born killer whose instincts were to kill first and ask questions later.

Favorite Quote ~~ “Doesn’t have to go down this way, David.”
